Transport Options in Bangkok
One of the great things about living in Thailand is the infrastructure and options for travel. While you may get tired of the constant traffic in Bangkok, you will be pleasantly surprised at the general infrastructure in the country. All regions and cities are connected by top quality roads. It’s really a remarkable difference from the rest of South East Asia. Many Thais don’t have their own car, so through the forces of demand and supply have developed many inexpensive and effective methods of travel that all fill a need.
Bangkok is notorious for its traffic problems and that part is sure to frustrate many expats. Parking in Bangkok is equally difficult to find and is also expensive. Luckily there is an oversupply of cheap, comfortable and air conditioned taxis. Bangkok has to be one of the few countries in the world where taxis are both ridiculously cheap AND wonderfully comfortable. The Skytrain and Metro in Bangkok serves as the main transport lines in the city. Between the two, they cover most parts of Bangkok and are as modern, clean and safe. Air conditioned buses will take wherever you want to go for a very small sum, but be ready to be stuck in traffic. When the traffic gets clogged you can also always jump on a motorcycle taxi and speed trough traffic. Last but not least, there is the canal and river boats for a change of pace. As you can see, Bangkok has an amazing variety of transportation options.
Outside Bangkok you are equally spoilt for choice. At the lowest end are the buses that range from third class to VIP and go anywhere in the country.
Trains connect the main parts of Thailand. The overnight trains to Chiang Mai and Surat Thani offer a relaxing way of travel.
Domestic flights and even flights in the region are incredibly economical. For only a few thousand Baht you can fly everywhere in the country with Nok Air or Air Asia, the last also has frequent promotions to neighboring countries. This is a must-do for expats. Book a weekend in Hong Kong, Kualu Lumpur or Bali for a fraction of the cost of an airline ticket back home.
If you want more privacy and choice there is always the option of driving your own car. It’s easy and fast to get a Thai driving license and with that, you can go anywhere, any time you want.
