Hairdressers
If you want a haircut by a Westerner or a Western-trainer stylist, then the hairdressers below are recommended. However, they are much more expensive than local hairdressers, but you will probably receive a cut that is most similar to what you received back home. There will be an English speaker at each of these establishments.

Finding a good local hairdresser in Shanghai can be a hit-and-miss experience. The best advice is to go off the recommendations of people who have found hairdressers they like and trust. Gentleman can find impromptu barbers on street corners as easily as ladies can fine established salons with trained stylists. For men and women both, the best advice is to take a photo of the desired haircut with you. Do not rely on your stylist having a good enough grip of the English language to make your vision a reality.

Beauty Parlors
For all your other grooming needs, there are many beauty parlors in Shanghai offering facials, manicures, pedicures and hair removal services. Which salon you choose will, of course depend on the part of the city you live in. Although some of the larger, well established chains do have several locations throughout the city. As with hairdressers, it is best to get a recommendation from a fellow expat to decide where to get your hair or feet done. Personal favorites are Frangipani and Dragonfly which offer massage, facial, pedicure and waxing services at most of their outlets.

Massage Parlors
These are very common in Shanghai and cater to both men and women. There is usually at least one, sometimes more, massage parlor on every street. Take into account that many of these places also offer what is considered for Westerns sexual services, the famous “happy ending”. This doesn’t mean that you can’t get a quality “normal” massages; a simple “bu yao” is enough to avoid extra services. But if you want to be sure that there won’t be any misunderstanding, we suggest you to go to any of the parlors listed below.
