The list of pet facilities below represents what we believe are the best in Shanghai. However, the popularity of keeping pets is increasing quickly in the city, and more stores are opening all the time. We shall strive to keep this list as current as possible.
Pet Shops
Shanghai expats tend to treat their pet dogs and cats as virtual members of the family. Pet shops are important to them. One store that is as clean and professional as anything we have seen outside of China is the Pet-In stores in Gubei – one in the Carrefour and one on Hongmei lu (see contact information below).
Pet food and other pet items, imported and domestic, are readily available in most supermarkets. However, if a pet has a special diet, the owner should bring a large supply just in case. Specialty pet stores are springing up all over the city and niche services in pet clothing, pet vacations and even pet dating are gaining popularity among Shanghai’s animal lovers.

Vets and Kennels
Shanghai has many well-equipped veterinary clinics, with some of the vets having trained in the West – remember, you should only choose a vet that has Western training, because the local vets are not as well trained academically and they do not treat pets as special “people.” Most foreign clinics are located in Gubei or Pudong, where most of the foreigners live. Some facilities offer 24-hour emergency treatment, although none offer pet transport. See our section on Veterinarians for more information.
While there are more and more kennels in Shanghai, many expats choose to leave their pets with friends or ayis. Night stays at kennels range from RMB 60-120 per night.

Grooming and Training
Almost all pet stores and vets offer grooming services – some of them have developed training courses for your dog. Pet grooming can be done by many people, but dog training requires someone with a trainer’s license – check their credentials. We believe that the two Pet-In stores in Gubei offer the most professional grooming services.

Important Notices for Pet Owners
- Licensing:After you arrive in Shanghai, and each year thereafter, you will have to register your dog (you do NOT have to register cats) at the local police department. You will pay a fee of 2,000 RMB if you live inside the outer ring road, and 1,000 RMB for living outside that road. Take these documents with you:
- Your apartment or house rental contract
- Your color headshot photo (one passport sized picture)
- Your side view, full body color photo (one 3-inch picture)
- Copy of your passport photo page and visa page
- Copy of the your working permit
- Copy of your resident’s permit
- Leashing: Keep your dog on a leash at all times when outside – it’s the law.
- Walking the dog: There are no restrictions about where you can walk your dog. In fact, in the last years ample street corners in every neighborhood have become meeting spots for pet lovers. Crowds of dogs play while their owners chat, a good chance to use your fancy Mandarin. As everywhere else, it’s common courtesy to clean up after your pet.
- Muzzle Law: If you have a ferocious dog or if your dog causes a resident to complain to the police, then you probably will have to muzzle your pet.
- Keep Cats Indoors: It is advisable to keep your cat inside as the police will capture stray cats and put them to sleep; they do not spend much time differentiating between pets and strays.
Second Chance Animal Aid Shanghai (SCAA – http://www.scaashanghai.org) a non-profit organization that promotes the care of pets in China. They have a good website about importing and owning cats and dogs in Shanghai.
