Relocation for Delhi Job Guide
If you have a job in India, you will need to apply for an Employment (E) Visa from the Indian consulate in your home country. Employment Visas are multiple entry and are normally valid for one year. They are renewable in India for up to five years, but must be renewed annually. Employment visas are job-specific and contain your employer’s name. If you change jobs, you will need to return to your home country and reapply for a new employment visa. All nationalities require this visa in order to work in India. However, if you are of Indian descent and hold a Person of Indian Origin (PIO) or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, then you are exempt from this requirement and may work and change jobs without an employment visa.
The documentation required for employment visas vary and are constantly changing. In most cases, you’ll need to furnish the following:
- your passport
- two passport-sized photos
- proof of residence
- an offer letter
- a contract
- proof that your employer organization is registered in India
- a tax liability letter stating that your employer will pay taxes on your behalf
- a filled-in employee details form (available from the visa office) outlining your qualifications and experience
- a filled-in project details, or Annexe II, form (available from the visa office) providing details of the manpower and duration of the project for which you are being hired
- a copy of your CV/resume
- a justification letter from your employer explaining what special skills you have that are not easily-available in the Indian workforce
Spouses and dependents of employed persons should apply for Entry (X) Visas, which are dependent on the employed person’s visa conditions. Marriage and birth certificates must be submitted in case of spouses/dependents.
Employment and entry visas can take anywhere from one day to a couple of weeks to obtain, depending on the jurisdiction in which you apply.
