A Vietnamese driver’s license is required to drive in Hanoi. No test is required—to apply, take your national or international license, a photocopy of your passport, your Vietnamese visa or identity card, and three passport photos to this address:

Here’s what you need to apply:
- You need your original driving license plus a notarized (translated) copy
- Original passport and a copy of the passport and visa
- Letter from your employer verifying your employment and stating your position.
- 2 photos size 2*3 and 1 photo size 3*4
A letter of endorsement from your company or sponsoring organization will help expedite the application, which can sometimes get caught up in red tape, even though the process appears straightforward. The process usually takes 7 – 10 working days. You’ll be notified by phone or email when your license is ready, but check back if you don’t hear from the office within a couple of weeks. Licenses are valid for five years from the date of issue.
