Local furniture has a definite Indian style. Tropical woods like rosewood and teak with intricate carvings, brass and golden colored handles and knobs, and delicate embossings are used and give each piece an exotic feel. Common Indian soft furnishings, such as couches, curtains, and pillows, are vibrant in color and sheen. You can complete an Asian look with gorgeous oriental carpets from India, Pakistan, Iran, or China – just be certain the high price tag is due to high quality and not a greedy salesman!
With time and patience, you can add unique character to your home with antiques. Choose between purchasing from antique dealers or from bazaars like Chor’s Bazaar. Use the same caution for buying antiques as you would for buying oriental carpets to ensure you are getting an authentic, quality piece.
Relatively inexpensive cane furniture is widely available and is either pre-made or made to order. Deliveries take a few weeks for beds, tables, and chairs made from cane.
If you prefer contemporary styles, you’ll find modern furnishings in Mumbai, but they are imported from Europe and are much more expensive than local furniture. The selection of modern, “clean lines” furniture is limited. To the great disappointment of many European families, there are no IKEA stores in Mumbai yet.
