The Portugal Golden Visa has been wildly popular in recent times, as it offers a route to full European Citizenship in a few short years without ever having to move to the country physically. With Golden Visa investment options starting at €280,000 and physical stay requirements of just one week per year for five years, this is the most accessible route to a European passport that is currently available.
Unfortunately, the future of the program is under threat. The Portuguese government is introducing measures that will soon see tight restrictions placed on the Golden Visa for expats and global nomads. With an ongoing housing crisis in the country, real estate investment will no longer be permitted. The only viable route to the Portugal Golden Visa will be investment funds, with a minimum investment amount of €500,000. This is a sizable increase that will take the program out of the reach of many potential investors.
When will Portugal’s Golden Visa rules take effect?
Changes to the Golden Visa law have been passed by the Portuguese Parliament but were ultimately vetoed by the President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. However, as the Socialist government has an absolute majority in Parliament, they may approve the law again with few or no changes. The President would then be forced to the law. In spite of this, the administrative delays this presents would mean the new Golden Visa law could not take effect until late September or early October.
