Facilities for pets in Bangkok
Having pets is a big responsibility wherever you are in the world, and moving to a foreign country that you are unfamiliar with makes the responsibility even greater. As well as being home to a number of excellent vets and animals hospitals, Bangkok is also home to catteries and dog kennels which will look after you animals should you go on holiday or away on business. Many of these boarding kennels are located in animal hospitals and are good value for money as well as a trustworthy place to leave your pet.
Laws and Regulations
Pets are classified as domestic animals in Thailand, which means an animal that is raised and fed by humans. Pets are rarely registered with authorities, but the law actually requires dogs to be registered at the local district office within 120 days of birth. After registering the dog, a dog identity paper will be issued which the owner must have ready anytime the dog is outside. It’s also necessary to get a microchip implanted in order to get this ID paper. Bring the following to the local district office:
- Microchip certificate
- Copy of the owner’s passport
- Copy of Tabien Baan or proof of address
- Rabies-vaccination certificate
Rabies Vaccination
All warm blooded pets are required to have a rabies vaccination. The vaccination can be given by any veterinarian and is cheap.
Etiquette
Thailand, being a Buddhist country, praises compassion with all living things including animals. That doesn’t mean Thais care particularly much about animal welfare, though. Homeless and ownerless ‘Soi dogs’ roam the streets in Bangkok and carry disease, which is why it’s rarely a good idea to walk a dog on the streets of Bangkok. Use the dog parks mentioned below.
