Tax Advisors Guide
If you have moved to Spain to work, your first port of call for tax advice should be your new boss or the HR and payroll departments of your company. They are going to know the most about Spanish income tax and how it relates to the company.
If your situation is a little different (you are self-employed for instance) you can either file your tax return yourself or have an abogado (lawyer) or tax advisor do it for you.
The Spanish tax office is trying to get online. Their latest initiative is PADRE: the Personal Income Tax Return Help Progamme (Programa de Ayuda a la Declaración del Impuesto sobre la Renta de las Personas Fisicas). It is not possible to use this system remotely yet, it is still necessary to go to a Spanish tax office to access it (the staff are supposed to go through it with you). This is done by phoning ahead for an appointment (the number is 901 223 344). Although there is information on PADRE available online in English, PADRE itself is only available in Spanish.
There may be an English-speaker at the tax office to help you, but not always. The good news is that PADRE is available at some bank branches (you don´t need to have an account to use it) and Spanish banks are far more likely to have English-speaking employees than the Spanish tax office is. Try La Caixa (http://lacaixa.es) for the highest success rate in finding an English speaker working in a bank.
A simple tax return using PADRE will cost about €35 and a more complicated one will be capped at €60.
If you would like to have your tax return done for you (usually a wise move at least for your first return), there are huge numbers of English-speaking tax attorneys and advisors in Barcelona. There isn’t a Spanish tax association so to speak, but following is a list of advisors who are the longest established and most highly recommended.
