Soccer and Rugby
Currently, Newlands Stadium, with its capacity of 40 000 seats, is the place to watch both rugby and soccer matches in Cape Town. That’s soon to change with the completion of Green Point Stadium, which will become the main venue for Western Province Rugby and Soccer matches.
For now, though, it’s the home of the Vodacom Stormers, Cape Town’s rugby team, regarded as the best South African team in the Super 14, which includes 5 teams from South Africa, 5 teams from New Zealand and 4 teams from Australia. Stormers players regularly represent South Africa in the Springboks team.
It’s also the home field of Ajax Cape Town, the city’s soccer team, consistently one of the country’s best clubs when it comes to the Premier League. 5 Ajax players were chosen to represent South Africa in the 2010 World Cup.

Cricket
Newlands is also the centre of cricket in the Cape. Sahara Park Newlands is probably one of the most beautiful cricket grounds in the world, overlooked as it is by the green slopes of Devil’s Peak and Table Mountain. It has a seating capacity of 25 000, and is known as one of the few cricket grounds that favors spin bowlers. It’s the home ground of the Cape Cobras, who compete in the MTN Domestic Championship and the Standard Bank Pro20.
