Car Insurance Guide Dubai
All cars on the roads in Dubai must be insured. Indeed, before you take the car to be registered, you must have already arranged insurance cover. As in most countries, there are several different types of insurance available.
- Third Part, Fire and Theft – this is the legal minimum and also the cheapest. As the name suggests, it doesn’t cover damage to your car if you have an accident and you are to blame. This is often the only coverage you can get on older cars.
- Comprehensive – the minimum level of comprehensive insurance will cost approximately 4% of the value of your car. A cheaper deal is available to those with no-claims bonuses. It may be possible to use a no-claims bonus that you have from a previous country.
- Comprehensive, premium cover – extra cover is available on newer cars giving dealer repairs, free hire cars, protected no-claims bonuses, insurance coverage in neighboring Oman, off-road coverage for suitable vehicles. Depending on the number of options, the price can reach 10% of the value of your car.
Before you pay for your car, make enquiries about insurance options. It is notoriously difficult to find insurance for some sports cars. If you are under 25, you may find that you cannot find insurance or that it is prohibitively expensive.
When you are driving, be aware of the extent of your coverage. Don’t go off-roading or cross over into Oman unless you are covered. Also remember that Dubai has a zero tolerance for drinking and driving. If you have an accident and any alcohol at all is found in your blood, this will nullify your insurance. You will be liable for all costs and if someone dies, your insurance company will not cover the AED 200,000 blood money that is payable to the family of the deceased.
