Extremely low local salaries and a recent flood of immigrants from rural areas make domestic help available to a greater degree than in most expats’ home countries. Many expat families have at least one domestic helper to assist with shopping, housecleaning, cooking and child-care. Part- or full-time drivers, gardeners and handymen are also common.
Vietnamese are extremely kind and humble, and in addition to contributing valuable assistance to a household, domestic staff often become friends of the families they help, as well as serving as windows to Vietnamese culture and language.
