Most expats who own automobiles in Hanoi hire a driver, at least for weekdays. Driving is highly stressful, and in addition a local driver will know the city’s one-way streets, parking areas and short cuts better than you ever will. It’s incredibly affordable as you can hire a driver for only about $100/month and the ability to nip into a shop while your car waits for you at the curb is priceless!
To find a driver, start with your immediate grapevine—put the word out to your friends and colleagues, and to your landlord if you have a good relationship with him. Often your need will be anticipated, and acquaintances will recommend someone to fill this position before you even mention it.
