Most internships in Hanoi are unpaid, unofficial, and are connected with NGOs (non-governmental organizations). If you have an internship in Hanoi, you will probably have to do the visa dance of leaving Vietnam every three months, and getting a new visa in Thailand or Laos. You can get a 3-month business visa in person or by mail from a Vietnamese embassy, or online through an agency.
The process takes about a week, but apply two weeks in advance to be safe. Currently, 3-month visas could not be extended in-country, but regulations are always changing–so check with your organization a few weeks before your visa expires to see what can be done.
