You can’t apply for a work visa in Vietnam until you have a sponsoring employer. If you’re coming to Vietnam to try to find such an employer, you can apply for a 1-month tourist visa or a 3-month business visa. These visas can be procured in person or by mail from a Vietnamese embassy, or online through an agency.
The process takes about a week, but apply two weeks in advance to be safe. Currently visa types can NOT be changed in-country. Most expats working in Hanoi take ‘visa runs’ to Cambodia or Thailand for a day or two if they need to change or renew a visa.
