Most students come to Hanoi on a tourist or business visa, and change to a student visa after they have enrolled in a school. Once you have documentation from your school, you can change your visa in-country. A 1-month tourist visa or a 3-month business visa can be procured in person or by mail from a Vietnamese embassy, or online through an agency.
This process takes about a week, but apply two weeks in advance to be safe.
Once you’re in Hanoi and enrolled in a school, your institution will issue you an enrollment certificate that allows you to change to a student visa. You will have to attend class regularly in order to receive and maintain this visa! Once you have the school’s endorsement, you can get a student visa for about $150/year at the Hanoi Immigration Office:
