Main Facilities and Practitioners Guide
Hong Kong’s health care system is of a high standard and many of the territory’s medical professionals were trained or have undergone postgraduate training overseas. Hospitals are well-equipped and offer a wide range of specialist services. There are more than 50 hospitals in Hong Kong that all offer in-patient and 24-hour emergency services. Of these, 12 are private hospitals; the remaining are run by the Hong Kong Hospital Authority.
Public Hospitals
Subsidized medical services are available to all eligible residents holding a Hong Kong Identity Card, including expatriates on a valid working visa and their dependent family members. Government hospitals and specialist and general outpatient clinics are very inexpensive, with a day’s stay including treatment and medication at about HK$100. However, the crowded waiting rooms and longer waiting lists for appointments and outpatient treatments, combined with language difficulties, make public hospitals a less attractive option.
English-speaking doctors are not guaranteed in these hospitals, although you will find that those hospitals located in the Central district, Mid-Levels and South Island areas of Hong Kong will have a higher percentage of staff with English-language skills.
Some of the public hospitals favored by expatriates are listed below:

Private Hospitals
Most expats favor private medical care because of the considerably better English skills of the medical staff and the more personal attention they offer. Consultation fees in private hospitals do not include drugs, treatments, tests and procedures. You can pay by check, credit card or by presenting an accepted health insurance card.
As far as possible, make an appointment in advance as hospitals are often busy and with the exception of emergency cases, you have to be prepared to wait to see a doctor. All private hospitals require a deposit or a letter of guarantee from an accepted insurance company or an employer. Charges for hospital fees start from HK$640 a day for a bed in a general ward to over HK$3,000 for a private ward. English-speaking doctors and nurses are available at all private hospitals.
