Renting a car is almost unheard of in Hong Kong. Even for those planning a day trip to the countryside, public transport or getting a taxi is preferable to renting a car, unless it is an extremely remote location.
The rental will cost about HK$850 a day for a small car but this can easily go up to HK$3,000 a day for more luxurious options. Drivers are required to be at least 25 years old and to have held a valid driver’s license for more than two years. A credit card deposit, usually between HK$5,000-$8,000, is also required. Vehicles that are to be used in both Hong Kong and mainland China will require two sets of number plates, one for Hong Kong and one for China. The hire car companies will be able to advise you on this. People who intend to drive in China will also require a China-issued driving license.
