Bakery Option in Houston
The most commonly eaten bread in the U.S. is not freshly baked bread, but soft-crust bread which is only sold in grocery stores, sliced and bagged. This type of bread is also available in many different flavors and flours, such as whole wheat with honey, for example. Bread is generally eaten as a sandwich for lunch or dinner. For breakfast, Houstonians prefer bagels and donuts. If you also like bagels, many expatriates like Einstein Bros Bagels stores where you can sit down in a café-style setting or pick up an order of bagels to go.
If you are looking for a traditional around-the-corner local bakery in Houston, you will not be successful. Instead y will find freshly baked bread, rolls and cakes and pastries, at La Madeleine French Bakery and Café, Whole Foods Market, a natural and organic grocery store with a bakery inside or in some of the larger grocery store chains in Houston that have also established bakeries inside their stores. Look for new stores as older stores may not have an in-store bakery yet. A favorite with expats are the newer HEB stores which have a huge selection of bakery goods.
As with traditional bakeries, make sure you visit the store early in the day to get fresh goods, such as breads. While the grocery chains may bake bread throughout the day (particularly French bread that is popular for dinner), it is not guaranteed to find your favorite fresh bread late in the afternoon and Whole Foods and La Madeleine may be completely sold out by that time.
Houston is also home to cake lovers who most often enjoy them in a restaurant-type setting. One popular establishment with expats is The Cheesecake Factory, which serves normal lunch and dinner but is famous for huge cheesecakes in all flavors. The House of Pies is also very well-liked among expatriates.
