Taxi Services in Los Angeles
Unlike other most big cities, cabs are not so easy to catch off the street in Los Angeles. Since most Angelinos have their own cars, cabs have to be called unless you are at the airport or a major hotel. If you are calling from residence or place of business, the cab company will call you when your cab is outside.
There are more than a few taxi franchises operating in Los Angeles and some are better than others. All are recognizable as cabs by the TAXI sign on the roof of the car and by the companies name and telephone number painted on the sides of the car. A taxi driver will indicate he’s free to take a fare when his TAXI sign is lit.
Many cab companies offer a range of vehicles depending on your needs. If you are traveling to the airport with half a dozen suitcases, it is best to notify the cab company before hand so that they send a larger car. Many companies also provide limo services and wheelchair access.
As with most big cities, LA’s cab drivers are a colorful mix of foreign-language expats who are always willing to share their experiences of living in LA, at least those that speak English. Most are a courteous bunch who won’t leave you struggling with bags.
All rates are set by the Department of Transportation so haggling over fees is futile. Rates are prominently displayed on the back window or the back of front passenger seat. http://www.taxicabsla.org/
Though not mandatory, it is our customary to tip your taxi driver about 10% of the fare.

Airport Shuttle
Airport shuttle services are highly recommended for trips to and from the airport. Their airport shuttle fares are around a third of the price of a cab and they guarantee their customers pick-up and arrival times. Be prepared to share the ride if there are other passengers going in the same direction. The fare is charged per person, so if you are traveling with more people, taxis maybe cheaper.
