Open-air Markets in Madrid
The only open air market in Madrid is el Rastro, which has some stands that sell fresh fruits and vegetables, but is made up primarily of stalls selling antiques, clothing, jewelry, knick knacks, etc. The Rastro takes place every Sunday from about 10:00AM to 3:00PM between the Lavapies and La Latina neighborhoods.
Although Madrid does not have open air food markets, it does have wonderful municipal markets that are made up of individually owned stalls specializing in fruits, vegetables, fish and seafood, meat, poultry, cheeses, dried goods, baked goods or cold cuts. In many of these markets you can also find locksmiths and tailors.
The municipal markets are the best and most inexpensive place to buy fresh foods. Bargaining may be acceptable at the Rastro, but it is not acceptable at these markets. Workers at these stalls also do not call numbers so that everyone is attended to in the order in which they arrive. Therefore, it is important to notice who was at the stall before you and who came after, so that you know when you’re the next to be served.
The standard shopping hours at these markets is Monday-Friday from 9:00AM – 2:00PM & 5:00PM – 8:00PM and Saturday from 9:00AM – 2:00PM.
