There are scores of private hospitals in Melbourne, although only a handful of public. Private hospitals are often smaller, housed in Heritage buildings with low bed numbers. Epworth HealthCare is a provider of acute medical, surgical and rehabilitation services in Melbourne. The group has four divisions: Epworth Richmond, Epworth Eastern, Epworth Freemasons and Epworth Rehabilitation, with rehabilitation sites at Richmond, Camberwell and Brighton. With over 1200 beds and more than 4000 staff, Epworth HealthCare is Victoria’s largest not-for-profit private hospital group.

Cabrini Health is a not-for-profit Catholic health care service. With six sites and over 700 beds, Cabrini Health comprises two acute care hospitals, a palliative care service and a residential care facility. Although you do not need to be Catholic to use a Catholic health service or hospital, if your case involves a possible pregnancy termination or other treatment that is not condoned by the Catholic Church, you should probably look elsewhere. The Royal Women’s Hospital (see below) is one public provider of terminations and there are several private clinics, usually listed under Fertility Control and Family Planning in the Melbourne Yellow Pages.

500 registered beds and more than 1,600 staff across three campuses in Fitzroy, East Melbourne and Kew. St Vinnie’s is one of Melbourne’s busiest and biggest acute care hospitals. Major specialties include orthopedics, cardiac services, maternity, reconstructive plastic surgery and neurosciences. Also ear, nose and throat, oncology and hematology, brain and spinal, gynecology, oral and maxillofacial and gastrointestinal. Take note, emergency care facilities for St. Vincent are located at the Fitzroy campus only.

The Alfred is the most well known and extensive of Melbourne hospitals.
Alfred Health is the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne and a major provider of specialist statewide services to the people of Victoria. These services are provided across the continuum of care from ambulatory, to inpatient and home and community based services. The Alfred is a teaching hospital, and has an Emergency Room (which is where you will most likely be taken by an ambulance for any accident or injury occurring in the inner city area).

Royal Melbourne Hospital City Campus is a tertiary, teaching, referral hospital providing specialist and general medical and surgical services, including cardiac, neuroscience and oncology, as well providing a major trauma service and Victorian Infectious Diseases Service. Sub-acute care, including aged care, rehabilitation, ambulatory care, and residential and community services are located at the Royal Park campus, just a few blocks further north.

This hospital (often referred to by locals as “The Women’s) is located at the top of the CBD and is Australia’s largest specialist womens’ hospital. It offers a full range of services in maternity, gynecology, neonatal care and women’s health. It also offers complementary services such as social work, physiotherapy and pastoral care. Specialist clinics in Infertility and Endometriosis are also available. It is a major teaching hospital of over 200 beds with links to the University of Melbourne and La Trobe University. Co-located in the same building is the Frances Perry Private Hospital, a 69 bed private hospital for women.
