Public School System
Expats prefer international schools to the public schools for a more global perspective and guaranteed high quality education.
In Mumbai, public schools are actually run more like private schools. They require students to pay low monthly tuition fees and bus fees and are either partially or totally privately funded. Public simply means that the schools are open to anyone who would like to apply. There are government run schools, but they are not options for expat children due to very low standards. Convent schools are a type of public school run by nuns.
Marahti is the main instructional language amongst public schools, though English comes in as a very close second. Hindi is also taught as a second language.
The curricula and quality of public schools are variable, and many times unsatisfactory, as are the extracurricular activities and facilities. For this reason, take the time to ask pointed questions and tour the facilities before making a choice. Also consider the student to teacher ratio, the experience and background of the teachers, the focus on English, and the maximum classroom size. Please see “What to Look for When Choosing a School.”
For admissions, contact the school for the application forms. Apply sooner rather than later, because due to the huge population in Mumbai, openings are snatched up quickly.
Required Documents:
- Birth certificate of the child
- Records or certificate from previous school
- Application form signed by parent or guardian
If the child is old enough, many public schools require an admissions test before acceptance.
