Sport Events Guide Singapore
The avid sports fan might find Singapore lacking in good opportunities to watch interesting major sports events. Formula 1’s arrival in 2008 was one of the first major international sporting events to hit Singapore in a long time. The Volvo Ocean Race also came through Singapore in 2008, but dismal attendance begs the question of whether or not Singapore is ready for sailing and water sports at the international professional level.
The Singapore Slingers, the local Singapore professional basketball team, offers a taste of spectator sport, but local support of the team has been patchy. Nevertheless, their games are fun opportunities to watch professional competition between teams from across Asia and Australia. The S League, Singapore’s professional football league, offers the opportunity to watch soccer competitions between 12 local clubs, though games are not very well-attended, either. See the S League website for game information and schedules. Games are played in stadia across Singapore.
Horse racing is held at Singapore’s Turf Club on selected Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays of each racing month. Full details can be found on the Singapore Turf Club website.
Otherwise, one would do better to participate themselves on an amateur team or watch matches held at schools and universities to get their fill of sporting life in Singapore.
