Parents are encouraged to take an active role in their child’s education at both the elementary & secondary school levels. Parent/teacher interviews are mandatory in all public schools in the province of Ontario, and are usually held at least twice a year. Parents have the right to be allotted time to speak to all of their child’s educators and any school that does not comply are subject to disciplinary action by the Ontario Ministry of Education. In addition to parent/teacher interviews, many Toronto schools have Parents Boards, where parents can address issues with the school and ensure they have a voice when it comes to school policies. Parents are also encouraged to volunteer for extra-curricular events such as sports tournaments, fundraisers, science exhibitions, and theatrical productions.
