Hospitals
There are many hospitals throughout the GTA. In the city itself, a hospital is only a few minutes away. Outside of the city hospitals are spaced further apart, and it can take half an hour or more to reach one.
- Toronto General Hospital
Located in “Hospital Row”, on University Avenue, this is one of Toronto’s teaching hospitals, where some of Canada’s finest medical practitioners have gotten their start. This hospital is also know for its excellent organ transplant facilities. - Mt. Sinai
A leader in cancer research and treatment, Mt. Sinai is also located on hospital row. Most of the city’s medial research is done here as well. - St. Michaels
Located in the heart of Toronto’s downtown, this is one of two major trauma centres in Toronto. - Sunnybrook Medical Centre
A huge hospital in the northwest part of Toronto, Sunnybrook is the second major trauma centre, and the recipient of most of Toronto’s airlift patients. Sunnybrook also offers a veteran’s hospital, and the Holland Centre for Orthopedic Care. - St. Joseph’s Health Centre
Servicing the southwestern portion of Toronto, St. Joe’s is also where Toronto’s best fracture clinic and physiotherapy facilities can be found.

General Practitioners
There are hundreds of doctors throughout Toronto. Some accept new patients, but many have a waiting list, particularly in the outlying parts of the GTA. When you arrive in Canada, seek a general practitioner as soon as possible. If you require medical care before you have a regular doctor, you will likely need to go to the emergency room at your local hospital, or seek a walk-in clinic.

Dental Care
Dental care is generally not covered under OHIP, and not all health insurance plans will cover dental. Your place of employment might offer health benefits that include extra dental care that is not covered under your health insurance plan.

Optical Care
Optical care is also not covered under OHIP, with the exception of eye exams for the young and the elderly. Make sure that your health insurance has coverage for eye exams and other eye care, including the purchase of glasses or contacts.
