Toronto is a very pet-friendly city, with many amenities and resources to help the pet owner in need. First, however, it’s important to go over some of the pet etiquette that is appreciated in Toronto.
- Always keep your pet on a leash when you are taking them outside. The city of Toronto does maintain leash laws throughout the city and you could be charged with a light fine (around $100) if your pet is found without a leash.
- You are responsible for any property damage caused by your pet on public or private property. Just one more reason to keep that Rottweiler on a leash!
- Cats are expected to stay indoors or on your property at all times.
- It’s a good idea to purchase tags for your pets to be worn on their collar at all times. This will be a great help if your pet is lost or stolen.
- Keep your dog inside at night. Barking dogs can result in noise fines (between $200 & $400) if your neighbors complain.
- You are expected to clean up after your pet at all times! Failure to pick up after your pet can result in fines of up to $500.
Parks
Most major parks in Toronto offer leash-free areas where your pets are free to roam. Look for leash-free areas in High Park, Withrow Park, Sorauran Park, and the Beaches. Despite being leash free, these parks still enforce pet litter laws. Owners are expected to clean up after their dogs or pay heavy fines of up to $500.
Kennels
Expats needing to leave their pet for an extended period of time might consider boarding their animal in a pet hotel or kennel. There are many to choose from in Toronto, but here are a few to get you started.
