Overview
The most difficult thing about entertainment in Moscow is choosing what to do – from sampling the haute cuisine of the restaurant scene to dancing the night away at an exclusive nightclub, from a casual beer with fellow expats in a real Irish Pub to a night of high society at the Mayor’s Moscow Viennese Ball – it can all be found in Moscow, and much more.
No matter what your preference for entertainment, you can find it in this cosmopolitan city. Restaurants from underpass bistros (which actually comes from the Russian word bystro – fast) to world-class haute cuisine and fine dining are all available. Cinemas show Russian films, foreign independent films, and the latest Hollywood blockbusters. Football (soccer) and ice-hockey matches abound during the appropriate season. The nightlife is notorious – in a good way – and nothing can compare with ballet performances by the Bolshoi Theatre Ballet Company.
New venues pop up, it seems, every day in Moscow, and you will never run out of new opportunities. If there is something you want to do that you cannot find already existing – start up a group of your own to pursue this interest! Expatriates in Moscow routinely use online forums (http://www.expat.ru); the community pages of the Moscow Times (http://www.moscowtimes.ru); or even the international Meetup.com (http://www.meetup.com) to find compatriots for activities from breast-feeding mothers meetings to nature-lovers hiking trips.
Only in Moscow
Something that you must visit when in Moscow is the circus – to the Russian, the attraction of the circus is of equal stature as the theatre or opera. Circuses have standing buildings and regular performances and are managed in much the same way as a theatre. The amazing performances are popular with adults and children alike!
There are two main circuses in Moscow:
