Expat Guide on Moscow Bakery Food
Russian bread is typically dark, heavy, and made of whole grains. The standard loaf is about half or one-third of the size of loaves sold in many western countries. However, white, airy loves, French baguettes, and larger bread loaves are also readily available.
All grocery stores sell bread. Larger chains will typically have the biggest selection of white breads and larger loaves. They will also often sell flatbreads or wraps (both known as lavash.) See Hyper/Supermarket Chains.
The best and freshest bread can usually be purchased at small independent bakery kiosks across the city, identified by a large sign that reads Khleb – bread. These are also great places to find fresh-baked cookies and typical Russian biscuits and sweet baked goods. There is also a great selection of decadent pastries and cakes, including typical Russian layered cakes such as Napoleon – dozens of thin crispy layers with deliciously gooey condensed-milk based syrup in between. These cakes are typically best purchased in the cake and baked goods department of supermarket chains.
Recently there has been a boom in cafe-bakeries which style themselves as French. For example Volkonsky has two locations, where French-recipe fresh breads and pastries are available all day long.

For something a bit special Bread and Co (http://eatout.ru/) is a bakery where it’s possible to find freshly baked breads and international pastries. Bread and Co is well known for its line of in-house preserves and its huge selection of cakes. There are more than ten outlets dotted around the city. The most central is at 17 Tverskaya Street, metro station Pushkinskaya.
At the less extravagant end of the scale is the chain Cinnabon which has conveniently placed bakeries in 7 locations around the city. They are known, perhaps unsurprisingly, for their cinnamon-based pastries and for iced coffees.
