Sydney is very pet-friendly. Many people own dogs, cats and to a lesser extent horses, fish and birds. Most people who own animals treat their pets like family members and provide them with good diets, exercise and medical treatment when needed. It is common to see dog owners walking with their dogs around the streets of Sydney. It is not very expensive to keep pets, aside from horses. Pet food is affordable and ‘roo meat’ (kangaroo) is a common, inexpensive, and healthy pet food for cats and dogs. Veterinarian treatment can become expensive if the situation is dire but there are options there, too, as pet health insurance is available.
Most pets are well looked after and are vaccinated and wormed, so disease is rare. More often pets are injured or killed by cars.
Dogs are not allowed on most of Sydney’s beaches, however, there are several beaches and parks set aside for dogs and you will find them very social places to take your dog walking. Anywhere else in public, dogs are required to stay on their leash, although this is not always practiced and never policed. Dog parks are great for your dog to run, play and socialize with other dogs. These parks also have doggy dropping bags and bins so you can dispose of your dog’s droppings. It’s not acceptable to not dispose of your dog’s droppings.
Some rental properties won’t allow animals and you simply need to check when looking for accommodation.
