South African tax law does not utilize Social Security numbers for tax dealings. Rather, your identity document (be it your foreign ID or passport, or a local ID), and any details therein, will be sufficient. Remember that, while drivers licenses are commonly used for identification for many transactions, they’re not considered sufficient for matters of financial gravity, such as opening a bank account, buying a car or renting an apartment.
