Parents’ Participation Guide
In most parts of the world, parents like to be a part of their child’s life in school. The same is true in Thailand and there are plenty of opportunities in the Thai school system. Ambitious Thai parents spend a lot of time helping their children study and do their homework.
Teaching is a very respected position in Thailand and also in Buddhism which means that teachers are treated with much respect from parents. Most Thais wouldn’t dream of questioning their child’s teacher or the schools teaching methods. That doesn’t mean, however, that you can’t participate.
It’s common for Thai schools to set up plays and other activities where parents are encouraged to participate and assist.
International schools usually have more face to face interaction between teachers, students and parents than the public schools and generally encourage parents participation in many ways. It could be something like helping to plan an international food fair at the school or arranging tours and excursions out of Bangkok.
Schools often have parents organizations and groups which work with the school administration. These groups also often have an active social life on their own with quiz nights, charity work and other social events. Many schools have online portals, networks and platforms where parents can interact with each other and get informed of the latest news. Make sure to inquire with the administration so that you are plugged into your child’s life at school from the beginning.
