Amsterdam is the stuff of legend. The trouble with legends is that they are not strictly speaking true. Moving abroad is a process that we would all like to be well prepared for. In the case of Amsterdam finding information and resources to aid your preparations will not be difficult, finding accurate and helpful information on the other hand takes a little bit more digging.
Remember that Amsterdam is a hugely popular tourist destination, it pulls in scores of expats from around the world, and Dutch people by and large speak and write excellent English. For the most part these facts are good news for an English speaker who needs some quick facts while making the move. But it also means that for every useful well researched website, and every representative, helpful book, there are scores of sites, blogs, and pamphlets penned by people who lived in the city for just three months, or expats who know the expat circuit backwards but wouldn’t know where to start in a Dutch company. When considering buying a book or before diving into the endless links of a website ask yourself if it looks like it is targeted at tourists. If the answer is yes then it probably will not provide you with the type of support you need. There is tons of quality information and resources about life in Amsterdam; you can afford to be selective!
