Dog Friendly Area (DFA)
Chicago Park District offers dog friendly areas, but owners have to apply for a permit and pay a tag fee to be able to use the CPD dog friendly areas. The permit and tag fee is a total of $5.00. Permits and tags are available at participating Chicagoland veterinary offices. The dogs must wear their tags at the parks, and the owners (or caregivers) must have their permits with them. Even if you’re just visiting for the day, you are supposed to have the permit and tag. There are no visitor or day passes. Beaches for Dogs
- Belmont Harbor Dog Beach, located on Belmont Ave off Lake Shore Dr: Dogs are allowed in this small fenced beach area on-leash. The city may ticket dog owners whose dogs are off-leash even though it is often used as an off-leash area by some people.
- Montrose Harbor Dog Beach – Lake Shore Drive: Dogs are allowed on part of the beach near Montrose. Dogs can run leash-free on the beach. Dog owners who violate the leash law by not having their dog on a leash between the parking lot and the beach are being fined with $75 tickets, so be sure to bring your dog’s leash. All dogs that use the dog parks are required to have an annual permit. The permits currently cost $5 per dog. You will have to visit an approved location to get a permit. Proofs of certain vaccinations are also required.
Beach Etiquette for Dogs
- Always keep your dog leashed when there is a leash law.
- Always clean up after your dog by using a poop bag or pooper scooper.
- Do not let your dog visit with other beach-goers or dogs, unless welcomed.
- If using an official off-leash area, your dog needs to be well-behaved and must listen to your verbal commands.
