Non-sponsored individuals are able to apply for a maximum 3-month visa, which is not extendable. This makes Hanoi less than ideal as a retirement city–however, some expats have remained here long-term by traveling to a neighboring country every three months. Even if you marry a local, getting a residence permit is a complex and lengthy process that could take more than a year.
Three-month business visas can be procured in person or by mail from a Vietnamese embassy, or online through an agency.
The process takes about a week, but apply two weeks in advance to be safe.
