Skilled Worker Visas
Skilled – Independent Migrant Visa (subclass 175)
If you have acceptable English language skills (if you can read this don’t worry, you’ll be fine), are under 45 years of age, and have qualifications or skills that are considered in demand by the Australian government, you may be eligible for this visa.
Eligibility for this visa is determined based on a Skilled Occupation List points test in which applicants are awarded points based on their vocation*, education, and experience. If your qualifications and career experience gain you enough points (over 120), you and any family members included as secondary applicants may get a visa relatively easily. If, however, your skills come in below the minimum point level (between 100 and 120) you will be kept in a ‘reserve pool’ for 2 years. If at any time during that 2 years the points threshold is lowered, or the government deems your specific skills in demand, you will have priority above others applying with similar skills.

*At the time of writing, those with skills and experience in medical, engineering, or scientific disciplines are awarded the highest amount of points as those skills are currently in high demand throughout Australia.

Skilled Sponsored Migrant Visa (subclass 176)
If you do not meet the minimum point requirement for the Skilled Independent Migrant Visa (above), but have a relative who is an Australian resident or citizen willing to sponsor you, you may be eligible for this visa. You must be under 45 years of age, be proficient in English, and have skills, experience and qualifications that add up to at least 100 points in the Skilled Occupation List points test. Your partner and any dependents can be included as secondary applicants.

Skilled Regional Sponsored Provisional Visa (subclass 475)
Similar to the Skilled Sponsored Migrant Visa (above), but provisional for 3 years, allowing you to work in a specific regional area that the government deems is in need of qualified workers. This visa may be easier to obtain as growth in regional areas depends on skilled people who are willing to live in these areas (many Australians are not). If this visa is granted to you and you have lived in the nominated regional area for 2 years, and worked for more than 12 months, you may then apply for permanent residency. As this is a provisional visa, there are specific limitations (you won’t be eligible for social security benefits or Medicare).

Skilled Recognised Graduate Temporary Visa (subclass 476)
This visa is specifically for those who have recently completed an Engineering degree at an institution recognised by the Australian government. If granted, this visa allows you to stay and work in Australia for 18 months. At any point during those 18 months you are eligible to apply for permanent residency if your skills and experience reach a point where they would provide sufficient points to meet the points test threshold (120). As this is a temporary visa there are specific limitations (you won’t be eligible for social security benefits or Medicare), however you may include your partner or dependants as secondary applicants.
