Private schools in South Korea consist of two types: International schools, and after school academies.
For more information on International schools in South Korea, see the ” International Schools” section below.
Private academies in Seoul can be found everywhere. Literally, you can’t walk three steps without tripping over at least three English academies, and two Taekwon-do academies. In Korean these are called hagwons, and most Korean children attend at least three or four of them, everyday. There is one for every school subject, plus extra-curricular activities such as music and sports. These academies (with the exception of English hagwans) will be taught in Korean. You will want to take this into consideration when choosing one for your child.
If your child attends an international school then they will have an abundance of extra-curricular activities, and after-school programs (including tutors) who will teach in English.
