There are a number of different things you should take into consideration when choosing a school in Singapore for your child:
- Your child’s educational performance and the school’s expectations: Schools in Singapore will be very strict in terms of the educational abilities that are expected from children. Different schools have different academic expectations and you should always apply to a school that it within your child’s capabilities.
- Distance from where you live to the school: Unlike in many other countries, schools in Singapore do not accept children based on catchment area. However, you should bear in mind the distance from the school to your home and how much time will be required to travel each day.
- Affiliated schools: Some secondary schools have affiliated primary schools. Pupils of such primary schools, who want to continue education in the affiliated secondary school can enjoy priority admission to that school.
- Your child’s needs: Some secondary schools have special facilities and resources to support pupils with special needs (e.g. physical disabilities, autistic spectrum disorder, dyslexia, hearing impairment, visually impairment). You should include such schools in your application if you need such special support.
