Modern technology has made life easier for everyone…but also a bit more expensive. Nevertheless, there are many places in Toronto where one can purchase brand name appliances, electronics, and hardware at reasonable prices.
Hardware and Appliances
Many people in Canada prefer to handle repair or restoration work in their homes on their own, and there are several chains of hardware stores catering to them. Many of the stores offer courses on home repair and some even offer free craft projects for children. Try the following hardware store chains if you need to do some basic home repairs:
- Canadian Tire
A huge Canadian chain of hardware stores that carry tools, automotive supplies, and home and garden equipment. All at low to mid-range prices. - Home Depot
A one-stop shop for all your home-owning needs. This big block store can be found just west of the city, and offers mid to high range prices on furniture, tools, appliances, electronics, and lumber. - Home Hardware
Several franchises of this hardware store can be found throughout the city. While most stores don’t have the same selection as the bigger block stores, their many locations make them very convenient for light repair work and DIY projects. Most prices are mid to high for quality items. - Rona
Another big block store that offers home building solutions at fairly reasonable prices.
Electronics
Although most department stores carry a range of electronic products and appliances, it is usually best to seek out stores which specialize in these products. There are several independent electronics stores throughout the GTA. Here are some of the larger electronics chain stores in Toronto.
- Best Buy
Everything from computers, to cameras, to entertainment systems can be found at Best Buy. With several locations throughout the city, Best Buy offers electronics at mid to high range prices and carries most brand names. - Future Shop
A big block electronics shopping centre that can be found in most malls and suburbs of the city. While they do offer low to mid-range prices on most items, the staff works on commission, giving the store a bit of a reputation for aggressive sales tactics. - The Source
A small electronics outlet that offers franchises in most shopping centres. Not the best place to buy high-end electronic equipment, but by they do offer low prices on accessories and small equipment. - Staples
Mostly known for office furniture and equipment, this big block store also sells brand name electronics and computers for relatively good prices. - The Apple Store
A one stop shop for all things Mac. Expect to pay premium prices, but the staff is knowledgeable, and the store carries everything Applephiles crave for their super-hip lifestyle.
