Department Stores
The major department stores in Vancouver are The Bay, Holt Renfrew, Sears Canada, and Zellers. The Bay is owned by the original Hudson’s Bay Company, founded in 1670, and is Canada’s oldest corporation, and one of the oldest companies in the world. Today, The Bay is a glittering department store comparable to Macy’s or Nordstrom, and has a large selection of fashionable clothing, accessories and shoes, cosmetics, and soft home furnishings. Home Outfitters is The Bay’s bed and bath home store.
Holt Renfrew is Canada’s answer to Saks 5th Avenue, where only the highest fashions and designer apparel are sold. Holt Renfrew offers a personal shopping service, which will review your wardrobe (if you wish) and determine which pieces you will need to update your look. The service is complimentary.
Sears Canada is very much the same as Sears in the U.S. and is, in fact, owned mostly by Sears Holdings Corporation in the U.S. (73%). Sears is a trusted North American name for home furnishings, appliances, apparel, electronics, kitchen and cook ware, bed and bath, power tools and garden supply, jewelry and watches, luggage, toys, and sports and recreation.
Zellers is owned by Hudson’s Bay Company, and is similar in price and style to Kmart in the U.S. (Kmart is owned by Sears Holdings Corporation). Zellers offers bargain-priced and discounted men’s, women’s and children’s apparel, home décor and furnishings, toys and games, electronics, mattresses, appliances, and more.
